Embellished Sweatshirt Jacket

One of my favorite things that I used to make for my girls when they were little was a jacket made from a sweatshirt. It was usually made from the scraps of a skirt that I had made.

Believe it or not it was actually hard to find a white sweatshirt. I did find one finally, at Walmart. First you need to find the center of the jacket. All edges of the jacket are covered with a ruffled trim. I make the trim from ripping 1-1 1/2″ pieces of scrap fabric. Join the strips of fabric together to create one long ruffled piece of trim.
Sew ruffled trim to all edges of the jacket: center of jacket, cuffs, collar and bottom of jacket. Ribbons can be added to the top of the sweater for tying the front closed. I like to fussy cut some of the fabric designs and then raw edge sew them to the jacket. Such a quick and easy project.
I used the Delighted collection designed by Amanda Herring of The Quilted Fish for Riley Blake Designs. The pattern for the skirt is from my Butterfly Kisses Collection called Tiny Dancer Skirt.

If you need a quick Christmas gift this would be a good one. Enjoy the creative process by using scraps you have lying around.
Happy Sewing!
