I taught some classes at Ruby’s Inn last week and promised that I would post some visual instructions for the patterns I talked about.
I love using Riley Blake knits. Flannels work well also for this project.
Measuring from the front neckline of the onsie I cut straight across at about 5 1/2″
The knit or flannel piece for the Gown bottom is cut approximately 40″ wide by 22-25″ in length.
Sew WRST. (with right sides together)
Serge or zig zag the bottom of the hem. Turn to the wrong side of the Gown about 2-3″. This forms the casing for the elastic and the ruffle at the bottom of the Gown. Sew 2 rows about 1/2″ apart. Leave a small opening in the top row for threading the elastic.
Thread a 14’15” elastic through the opening. Zig zag the elastic closed. Finish top stitching the top seam closed.
Ease the elastic around the bottom of the gown.
Gather the upper edge of the Gown. The gathering needs to be about 4″ longer than the onsie.
A little note that is handy when working with knits is to divide the onsie and the gown into four sections with pins. Match the pins and stretch in between the pins as you sew.
Sew WRST. Stretch and sew as you go
Now for embellishing.
I like to add a little flower and ruffles. The flower is 5 circles for the bottom layer and 4 circles for the top layer. Fold the petals in half. Layer on top of each other and sew.
I will show how to make this flower in more detail on the Hat tutorial tomorrow.
When working with anything that goes on babies I like to sew and not use glue. The sewing lays flat against the babies skin.
The ruffles are 1″ strips of the knit. You could also use cotton. When I use cotton I rip the 1″ strips because I like the raw edges. Gather down the middle of the strip. Zig zag in place.
Stretch and sew as you go.
Such a cute, fun and easy gift. I love giving gifts like this! They come from the HEART and the receiver appreciates the love that was sent along with it.
Stay tuned for tomorrow. I will post the tutorial for the cute baby hat tomorrow along with the flower embellishment.
Happy Sewing!

Size of my daughter‘s newly arrived dress is exact! I measured my daughter and purchased the closest size which was a medium. I am glad that she is happy.
After looking for weeks, I finally bought this dress for my sister’s wedding. It fit exactly as the sizing chart said it would, I got a size 8. I also believe the price was a steal!
