Quilting For A Cause

A short while ago I was asked by a neighbor to donate a quilt. The quilt would be auctioned at a Gala to raise money for the proposed Alpine Community Theater. I requested that my quilt group “That Alpine Quilt Group” make a few extra blocks so that I could assemble them into a quilt (we were already making charity quilts for Ghana, and the annual Salt Lake City “Festival of Trees” an event that raises money for the “Primary Children’s Medical Center”, what was one more quilt).

Our quilt group challenge this year is “Oh, my Gosh.” The quilt is a larger version being 1” blocks instead of ½” blocks. We called the quilt to be auctioned, “Almost, Oh my Gosh.” The theme for the auction was “Harvest The Talent.” The quilt does represent the talent I harvested from my quilt group. In a way, the accumulation of quilts on my website http://www.JinaBarneyDesignz.com represent years of harvesting the talent.

In my auction quilt, I used civil war prints and shirting prints. I added a dark brown 1 ½” stop border, a 6 ½” red civil war border and bound the quilt in dark brown. I labeled it with the theme, date, and “That Alpine Quilt Group.” I was able to get the quilt onto my quilting frame and quilted vines with leaves.

It wasn’t one of my favorite quilts but when I took it to the Gala organizer to be auctioned, she cried, stating that it was so beautiful. She was so appreciative of all the time and hard work. There are many reasons why we quilters are so enamored by quilting, but I have to admit this is one of the great ones.
