Baby Hat

This little baby hat is the followup to yesterdays baby gown. They make wonderful gifts and are so easy  and quick to make.
Everything that I will be showing you this week is in a new pattern called “Baby Couture” based on my lecture at Ruby’s Inn.

The first thing you need to do is cut out 2 hat templates. The rectangle is double the length of the hat. The width is about 7″. This rectangle is approximately 14″ x 7″. Sew WRST

Turn hat right side out. Turn rectangle with wrong sides together.

Divide both the hat and the rectangle into four sections and place a pin. Match pins and pin WRST .
Stretch and sew as you go. Knit is so wonderful to work with because it is so forgiving. I like to use my serger to sew knits but if you don’t have one use a straight stitch followed by a zig zag stitch for the edges.

Turn the trim of the hat just up past the seam. Stitch a few stitches on each side seam of the hat.

The flower embellishment is very simple and adds that finishing touch. You could also make all these baby items for a boy, only use boy fabrics and there is no need to embellish.

Cut 5 large circles for the bottom and 4 small circles for the top of the flower.

One circle is placed on the bottom. The next four circles are folded and placed on top. Stitch a circle around the middle catching all four petals.

Fold the next four petals the same. You fold each circle in fourths then place next to each other. Layer the petals. The second layer will be in the middle of the first layers seam.

Sew around all the petals starting on the outside edge of the middle. Keep swirling your stitches in a circle towards the center. This is about a 1/2″ stitched circle in the middle of the flower.

Stitch the flower to the side of the hat and you are finished.

These cute hats are cozy and warm. In the pattern there is a small and large hat size. All for infants.

I hope you enjoyed making this cute baby hat to go with the adorable baby gown yesterday.
Simple to make. The fabric used in this hat is The Sweetest Thing knits by Riley Blake Designs.
Happy Sewing!
